An Introduction to – Leena Mathews

Leena Mathews has travelled different places, being born in Germany, influenced by the Bay Area, inspired by the beauty of Japan, and deeply rooted in Maryland. Being an Army child, she was able to see the complexity of the world and its underlying injustices very early on.

Her work is devoted to the oppressed: the Black and Brown populations, those who white-pass and live in dual identities, the LGBTQ+ community, and everyone who was silenced or wronged. She is a spokesperson of these groups through her writing, as well as of her own offspring, children, and grandchildren, who are facing different challenges and yet are living with their various heritages.

She knows that she is not immune in a world where liberties are seen as being at risk. However, she does not give up the belief that love, which is unyielding, inclusive, and fearless, cannot be suppressed. Her first book, Privilege and Promise, is a very personal work that shares her experiences and aims to spark the necessary dialogues.
